Eco Event to Coincide with Announcement of Singapore’s own Green Product Certification by SGBC

(Singapore, September 06, 2010) – In one week, over 200 exhibiting companies from more than 20 countries internationally will showcase their latest environmentally-friendly building products, technologies, concepts and solutions at BEX Asia 2010, Southeast Asia’s premier Build Eco Xpo.

The three-day expo which is held in Singapore from 13-15 September will showcase major global players like BASF, Carrier, EnGro Corporation Limited, Johnson Controls, KONE, Interface, Sanyo and Trane and many more from the region and beyond including the United States, Belgium, Netherlands, UK, Switzerland, Australia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan and Thailand.

The event will be held alongside the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) International Congress 2010 – held for the first time in Asia – and the inaugural Singapore Green Building Council’s (SGBC) ‘Green Building Conference’.

On day two of the event at the 1st Anniversary Dinner of SGBC, the 1st dedicated green building product certification scheme to support the BCA Green Mark Scheme and the Building Industry, will be launched. The criteria for the assessment were formulated by close to 100 building professionals, academia, testing institutes and manufacturers. The Scheme will provide consumers, building industry stakeholders and government procurement system, an excellent listing of robustly assessed and certified green building products.

Singapore expects to see a sustained level of construction demand over the next 2 – 3 years. Singapore’s Building Construction Authority (BCA) has projected that the value of construction contracts to be awarded in 2010 will be between $21 and $27 billion, and between $18 and $25 billion for 2011 and 2012.

“BEX Asia is timely to complement and support the government’s efforts to accelerate and achieve a truly sustainable green environment by 2030,” said Michelle Lim, Managing Director for expo organizers Reed Exhibitions.

Over the last decade, many countries in Southeast Asia have initiated green efforts to ensure a greener and better living environment through the introduction of rating systems.

Malaysia launched a Green Building Index to promote sustainability in the built environment, Indonesia’s Green Building Council has a Greenship rating tool, and The Philippines Green Building Council has a Building for Ecologically Responsive Design Excellence (BERDE) Programme. Thailand developers have also begun to start adopting international standards such as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), the US Certification developed by the US Green building Certification Institute.

“The strategic eco-focus of BEX Asia allows exhibitors to present their products and educate potential customers on the benefits of their solutions, including adhering to rating regulations,” Michele added.

BEX Asia 2010 will unveil some of the new Green products, technologies, concepts and solutions such as:

  • The world’s first climate neutral carpet, Cool Carpet™; and the only modular carpet designed using the principle of biomimicry, the i2™ by Interface, Inc;
  • The latest in environmentally friendly real wood decking and fencing from Zirconwood;
  • A revolutionary new Nano-Technology gel coating for glass facades from Coat Innovate to reduce IR heat transmission;
  • Astral™ – a ‘MESH’-based system that uses proven radio frequency (RF) technology to control lighting applications within residential, commercial or hospitality environments by MK Electric
  • Tegma Asia Pte Ltd’s Smartcool™ Energy Saving Module™ (ESM™): a microprocessor based compressor optimizing device;

  • TÜV SÜD PSB will also roll-out its new carbon-free certification service for hotels at the event.

BEX Asia 2010 is expected to attract over 7,000 visitors and will be 25 percent larger than last year. The inaugural 2008 show attracted 110 exhibitors from 16 countries and nearly 4,000 visitors.

In partnership with the SGBC and Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA), the trio of eco-events combine to create Southeast Asia’s biggest and most important gathering of ‘green’ builders and property developers ever organised. Participants will have the opportunity to meet and engage with invited experts at workshops, tours and talks scheduled throughout the four days.

Discussion topics at the SGBC Conference will include: A World Green Building Campaign, Tackling Global Climate Change, Meeting Local Priorities; Rating Tools and Common Carbon Metric; Policies Paradise (with UNEP); Innovations in Financing Green Solutions. “Leadership in Green Building Lecture Series 6” will be given by US based David Johnson of William McDonough + Partners, and Bill Odell of The HOK Group.
