Data centres can no longer pay scant attention to the rising costs of energy prices as power typically takes up half the operating costs of a data centre. An energy efficient data centre, along with concerns for its environmental impact, should now be in the radar of CXOs.

Jointly organised by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) and SPRING Singapore, the Green Data Centre Forum is a full day free event that brings together a host of distinguished speakers to share on various topics ranging from standards, best practices, energy assessment and innovations that will help the forum delegates embark on a journey to green or greener data centres.

The Keynote Speaker is Ray Pfeifer, Co-chair, Silicon Valley Leadership Group’s Data Centre Efficiency Initiative. IDA and SPRING Singapore will also jointly unveil the Singapore Standard for Green Data Centres, which is developed to help organisations establish the necessary policies, systems and processes to improve the energy efficiency and minimise the environmental impact of their data centres (DCs) in Singapore.

Are you speaking the right language to Asian consumers when talking about sustainability?

Find out at the upcoming LOHAS Webinar: Engaging with Green Consumers in Asia

11:00 a.m. (GMT)/ 7:00 p.m. (SGT), 10th March 2011

Adam Horler, President of LOHAS Asia, will show how LOHAS has become a common language for sustainability between consumers and companies in Asia.

Typically speaking, Western companies market environmentally-friendly products and services as “green, eco, planet-friendly, sustainable etc.. But what if there already exists a common language of sustainability in Asia, among different countries with different spoken languages? Well, there is such a language and it is “LOHAS”.

LOHAS stands for Lifestyles Of Health And Sustainability and started out as a market research acronym in the United States in 2000. In 2002 the Japanese picked it up and since then it has spread virally among the consumers in North East Asia and down to South East Asia to come to represent the new way of living.

In this webinar, Adam Horler, President of LOHAS Asia, will show how LOHAS has become a common language for sustainability between consumers and companies in Asia, and present findings from ground-breaking 18-city surveys into the LOHAS consumers in Asia and how companies can access them to promote environmentally-friendly goods and services.

The International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) has published the International Standard ISO 26000 – Guidance on Social Responsibility. The standard provides voluntary guidance and is non-certifiable. It is intended for use by all types of organizations.

ISO 26000 provides guidance on the underlying principles and issues in social responsibility and addresses seven core subjects on social responsibility covered in the standard. These seven core subjects are 1) organizational governance, 2) labor practices, 3) the environment, 4) fair operating practices, 5) consumer issues, 6) human rights and 7) community involvement & development. The International Standard also provides guidance on putting social responsibility into practice in an organization.

The seminar aims to enhance the understanding of ISO 26000 among potential users and will share on how organizations can learn to implement ISO 26000 and align their current policies and practices on social responsibility in their organizations.

Organizations around the world are recognising the need for socially responsible behaviour. The perception of an organisation’s social responsibility behaviour and policy affects its reputation and its ability to attract and retain employees, customers and stakeholders.

Members from the National Working Group on Social Responsibility under the Management Systems Standards Committee will provide valuable insights on the ISO 26000 and its implications to business and society.

A Global New Green Deal for Global Economic Recovery [Event]

February 21, 2011 by

Date: Wednesday, 23 February 2011

Time: 3.00 pm – 4.30 pm

Venue: ISEAS Seminar Room I

Speaker: Professor K S Jomo, Assistant Secretary-General for Economic Development, United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA)

In early 2009, the UN Secretary-General proposed a Global Green New Deal (GGND) to accelerate economic recovery and job creation while addressing sustainable development, climate change, and food security challenges. This was undertaken by front-loading massive, multilaterally cross-subsidized public investments in developing countries in renewable energy and smallholder food agriculture to induce complementary private investments.

Following years of easy credit and over investment before the crisis, the world now faces underutilized over-capacity in most profitable economic sectors. In this situation, only well-coordinated cross-border public investments can fund needed green public goods and induce complementary private investments, for example, through public-private partnerships to address these global challenges.

Besides contributing to sustained economic recovery, such investments would also enhance climate change mitigation while advancing developing countries’ developmental aspirations and ensuring affordable food security. The Green Revolution of the 1960s – with considerable government and international not-for-profit support – increased crop yields and food production in wheat, corn and rice, requiring a second Green Revolution for other food crops was not extended to other crops, especially water-stressed agriculture in arid areas.

What does the Global Green New Deal involve and what are some of the major challenges for developed and developing countries?
