Iconic building projects are important for any city as they showcase the city’s achievements and capabilities, said Tai Lee Siang, president of the Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC).
‘For Singapore to stand out, it is important to have iconic green building projects as we scale the ranks to become a beacon of green and sustainable development in Asia,’ Mr Tai told BT.
‘They define the city’s values, convey its desired image and serve as inspiration for innovation among urban planners and even the community at large.’
Singapore has seen a number of iconic green projects come up of late – including the The Gardens by the Bay, which is aimed at providing Singaporeans with a verdant environment in which to live, work and play. Mr Tai said that The Gardens embody the principles of environmental sustainability. Among its key features are cooled conservatories which will house plants from the Mediterranean and Tropical Montane regions. Read more
Singapore Green Building Council Receives US$100,000 Grant from IBM to Help Build a Smarter Planet [Press Releases]

Singapore, 21 July 2011 – The Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC) today was awarded a grant of US$100,000 from IBM to help build a smarter planet by collaborating with the Ministry of Education (MOE) to seed the catalyst for the advancement of the smarter buildings agenda in Singapore. The grant – known as an IBM Centennial Grant – is part of the company’s Centennial Celebration of Service, dedicated to helping communities work better, as it marks its 100th year anniversary.
In this collaboration titled ‘Project Green Insights,’ SGBC will work with MOE to raise awareness of energy efficiency with schools in Singapore. SGBC will also leverage on IBM’s smarter building expertise and technologies to develop a system that will track power usage, and reduce energy and maintenance costs across 20 selected schools in Singapore. New BCA-SGBC Awards Recognise Individuals’ Contributions to Singapore’s Sustainable Built Environment [Press Releases]

Four distinguished individuals from the building industry were lauded by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) and the Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC) for their continual and outstanding contributions towards the sustainability of Singapore’s built environment. They will receive the inaugural BCA-SGBC Green Building Individual Awards at the BCA Awards 2011.
2 The winners were selected from a total of 35 candidates for the four award categories, namely Green Architect, Green Engineer, Green Advocate and Green Innovator. They were assessed by a well-represented panel of judges led by CEO, BCA, Dr. John Keung and Er. Lee Chuan Seng, the immediate past Chairman of SGBC. The panel of judges comprises established professionals and individuals from the public and private sectors who are actively involved in Singapore’s green building journey. The 2nd Green Building Week opens today with three concurrent events – the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) International Congress 2010, the Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC) Green Building Conference, and the BEX Asia 2010 exhibition. Eco Event to Coincide with Announcement of Singapore’s own Green Product Certification by SGBC
(Singapore, September 06, 2010) – In one week, over 200 exhibiting companies from more than 20 countries internationally will showcase their latest environmentally-friendly building products, technologies, concepts and solutions at BEX Asia 2010, Southeast Asia’s premier Build Eco Xpo.

The WorldGBC International Congress 2010 is a 2 day congress from 13 – 14 September 2010. 13th September 2010 is designed specifically for GBC Members, and registration is restricted to WorldGBC Members. 14th September is open to those interested in learning more about the latest trends and updates on international green building.

Inaugural SGBC Green Building Conference
SGBC Green Building Conference is a 1 day conference on 15 September 2010, and it will focus on green issues concerning the building and construction industry with more emphasis on green building technologies and green building designs as well as the retrofitting existing buildings. SGBC Green Building Conference provides a platform for our industry players to know and learn more on the Valuation and Financing Green Buildings, and the Green and Sustainable construction.
Green Mark Building Tour
The Green Mark Building tour on 16 September is specially arranged for participants to witness and experience green buildings in operations. The tours will create awareness amongst overseas delegates on BCA Green Mark Scheme which is more suitable for the tropical climate, and at the same time, it will demonstrate Singapore’s technical expertise, capabilities and R&D in green building developments.
BEX Asia
A concurrent event with World GBC Congress and SGBC conference will be BEX Asia, Southeast Asia’s green building exhibition. This exhibition is focused Build Green featuring eco-friendly, energy efficiency building materials, design and architecture for the future of sustainable environments. International Green Building Conference and BEX Asia 2009

The inaugural International Green Building Conference (IGBC) 2009 was held recently in Singapore as part of the Singapore Green Building Week. The conference theme was “Build Green. The Future is Now.” and drew about 1,000 delegates from more than 20 countries to focus on sustainable building issues, green building technologies and designs.
During the conference, the new Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC) was launched to help lead and coordinate the building industry’s efforts, together with the government, and accelerate the development of green buildings.
As part of the Singapore Green Building Week, there was also a building exhibition, BEX Asia 2009, which showcases green-related products and services for the building industry. Here are some photos taken at the exhibition:
