Fourth Singapore International Water Week surges to new high [Press Releases]

Singapore International Water Week 2011, held from 4 – 8 July and themed “Sustainable Solutions for a Changing Urban Environment” notched new highs, with a bigger slate of exhibiting companies and an encouraging growth in participant numbers.
This global platform for water solutions attracted a record of some 13,500 participants from 99 countries/regions. This marks a growth in attendance figures of almost 60% since the inaugural event in 2008. The Water Expo saw close to 70% growth in exhibition space and a 70% increase in the number of exhibiting companies over the inaugural year of 2008. Over 600 companies took part in this year’s Water Expo, which attracted six new international pavilions from Australia, Belgium, the United Kingdom, the Milwaukee Water Council (USA), the Water Environment Federation (USA), and the Maryland-Asia Environmental Partnership (USA); taking the total number of pavilions to 15. The total value of announcements for projects awarded, tenders, investments and R&D MOUs reached S$2.9 billion. Read more
International Experts Commend Progress of Research & Development in Singapore’s Water Industry [Press Releases]

The International Advisory Panel (IAP) on Singapore’s Environment and Water Technology industry commented on the excellent progress that the Singapore water industry has made in the last five years. The panel held its annual meeting on 8 July 2011, as part of the Singapore International Water Week (SIWW).
Singapore is presently home to a flourishing water industry of more than 70 international and local companies, a significant increase from 50 in 2006. Investments made by these companies in the last five years, when fully realised, will contribute S$590 million of annual value-added to the Singapore economy and generate 2,300 professional and skilled jobs. Singapore-based companies have also been doing well in the international water markets, with a cumulative project value reaching S$8.4 billion since 2006. Through various incentive schemes under the Environment and Water Industry Programme Office’s (EWI) Environment and Water Research Programme, there is now a vibrant research community of 23 R&D centres working on more than 60 projects on leading-edge technologies. Singapore to ramp up NEWater and desalination capacity [News]

Singapore will ramp up its NEWater and desalination capacity such that by 2060 they will account for 80 per cent of Singapore’s water demand.
These targets had been set ahead of the expiry of Singapore’s second water agreement with Malaysia.
Malaysia has agreed to supply Singapore with water till 2061.
Speaking at the inaugural Water Conversation at the Singapore International Water Week on Tuesday, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong explained that the need to be self-sufficient in water has long been seen as a strategic necessity.
NEWater now meets 30 per cent of Singapore’s water needs and the target is to raise that to 50 per cent. Read more
Additional $140 million for water research [News]

Singapore has pumped fresh money into local water research to keep its edge as the leader in water technologies.
The sector will receive $140 million to promote research and development (R&D) efforts, with the aim of converting these ideas into practical water solutions, Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam said yesterday.
That would in turn attract more investment and create more jobs in the industry.
The fresh funds allocated by the National Research Foundation (NRF) will bring the total R&D budget for the sector to $470 million. Read more

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong engaged in a lively dialogue session with the participants at the inaugural Water Conversation at the Singapore International Water Week 2011. The session was moderated by Professor Tommy Koh, Ambassador-at-large, Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In response to questions on advice or lessons for overcoming water challenges, Mr Lee shared that there is no magic solution, but governments have to treat water as a strategic necessity and take a long view. For Singapore, the most important step was to treat water as a strategic priority, build up self sufficiency, and spare no efforts to achieve it. Read more
