Are you planning to use social media to communicate your company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) policy and activities? What are some things to take note of when using social media for CSR?
This article shares our thoughts on the communication of CSR through social media, which we presented at last week’s International Singapore Compact CSR Summit 2012.
The International Singapore Compact CSR Summit 2012 was held in Singapore from 27 – 28 Sep with over 400 business leaders, CSR practitioners, government officials, academics, students and non-governmental organisations coming together to share and discuss trends, threats and opportunities for CSR. This annual event, in its 4th year, is organised by the Singapore Compact for CSR – a national body promoting CSR in Singapore.
In our presentation, we outlined the social media landscape and shared 3 main points for companies and organisations to keep in mind when using social media for CSR: Listen and Understand, Tell Stories and Share, and Engage and Be Transparent. Read more

The transformation of the internet through new social technologies is changing the face of CSR. With Web 2.o comes CSR 2.o with new possibilities for social interaction, involvement and participation in finding innovative ways to tackle everything from individual business challenges to global problems.
Front-running companies are using the new technologies to engage stakeholders, innovate business and co-create new ideas and products in collaboration with the outside world.
Engaging stakeholders is made easy with, for example, the online ethical market place Ethical Economy, where companies get tools to live their values and build ethically significant stakeholder relations. Any company or organisation can invite friends, colleagues, suppliers or customers to give their endorsements or suggest ways to improve ethical performance. Read more

There is no one formula for sustainable value creation, partly because it is a journey more than an end-state, but also because it depends on the company’s culture, ambitions, market challenges etc.
Reviewing many of the current guidelines, tools and practices of champions, there are, however, some enabling factors that recur. In The New Pioneers I have compiled them into four essential cornerstones: The Four Cs of Clear Purpose, Corporate Engagement, Collaborative Co-creation and Clear Communication. They can be used as overall guidelines on the road to sustainable business success. Read more
Using Social Media to Transform Capitalism

In his book, We First: how brands and consumers use social media to build a better world, author Simon Mainwaring proposes the transition from Me First capitalism, the traditional free market and profit driven capitalism, to We First capitalism, where businesses and consumers use capitalism as a driver of prosperity for the greater good.
We First is about corporations creating value and building a better world, and consumers accepting a higher level of responsibility for creating the world they want. The transition to We First is realistic and possible today with the rise in social media, which gives consumers more leverage to persuade businesses to accept greater social responsibility for their behaviours, and offers businesses more opportunities to have real-time dialogues with their customers.
Simon argues that while some companies are embracing elements of corporate social responsibility and triple bottom line accounting, the overall progress of integrating sustainability into the fundamental principles of free market capitalism has been irresponsibly slow and not deep enough. To put business on the We First path, he proposes seven values: Sustainability; Fairness of Reward; Fiscal Responsibility; Accountability; Purposefulness; Engagement; and Global Citizenry. Read more
